Federal Agencies Now Able to Negotiate Contracts Directly with New Tribal 8(a) Company

Bay Shore Steel Works announces new Super 8a Certificate to allow Federal Agencies direct sole source machine, fabricating and finishing services

Bay Shore, MI – 24 August 2021 – Today, Bay Shore Steel Works (BSSW), a Native American Tribally-Owned steel manufacturing company, specializing in machining, fabricating and finishing, announced receipt of the Small Business Administration (SBA) approved Super 8(a) designation. This unique recognition by the SBA indicates that the Tribe and company has undergone extreme vetting to assure clients of its disadvantaged status and capability to perform in the federal arena. The SBA 8(a) program is to help provide a level playing field for small businesses owned by socially and economically disadvantaged people or entities, with the federal government limiting competition for certain contracts to businesses that participate in the 8(a) program.

“This means a great deal to our small business and the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians. This, coupled with our recently obtained HUBZone certification, positions us to obtain up to $20M in direct contract awards now and for years to come,” explained Trish Harris, BSSW CEO. “I am extremely proud of my colleagues for their persistent commitment to provide high quality parts on time to satisfy our customer’s needs.”

According to Anton Matye, BSSW COO / Senior Vice President, “This contracting option offers Federal agencies an opportunity to become directly involved in negotiating best value agreements in support of vital government missions. There are many benefits to the government and major corporations to utilize this contracting opportunity. As a result, agencies can be assured of being provided the best possible outcomes for machining services.”

The BSSW team has been providing machining, fabricating and finishing services to the US Department of Defense and their Prime Contractors for the last 21 years. More specifically, their capabilities include Plasma, Torch, Laser & Waterjet Cutting, Machining, Fabricating, Blasting, Certified Welding, CARC Finishing & Industrial Painting and Assembly & Kitting.

Current efforts are underway to find partner companies to provide the right combination of skills for pending contract prospects.
